General English for Executives

At ETC International College, we have systems for ensuring that clients receive personalized attention. We aim to provide the kind of linguistic training and support that they need in order to make rapid progress and quickly attain a good degree of fluency and accuracy in English. Clients will ordinarily study in small, multinational classes (unless otherwise specified by the client or their sponsor), along with clients of a similar age and language ability. The maximum number of clients is 8 but the average number of clients is 4.

Course type

Standard course (20 lessons = 15 hours per week) or

Intensive course (30 lessons = 22.5 hours per week). This course includes 10 lessons of communicative skills practice per week. This course covers the same material and uses the same methodology as the General English Standard Course. However, in the afternoon on four days per week, there are two lessons of additional communication practice. These extra lessons are designed to give clients the chance to develop their confidence in speaking and listening.

Levels

We run English Language Studies (general English) courses at six levels:

  1. Beginner (advance notice required! Please tell us if you are a beginner).
  2. Elementary.
  3. Pre-intermediate.
  4. Intermediate.
  5. Upper-intermediate.
  6. Advanced.

Built into every client’s course are the following:

  1. Placement test. This is designed to enable us to gauge the approximate level of a client and to place him or her in a class along with other clients of similar ability.
  2. Needs analysis. This is used to find out what clients need and would like to learn on their course.
  3. Skills development. Development of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking through meaningful practice.
  4. Task-based activities designed to improve fluency, such as discussions, pair and group work, roleplays, problem-solving, and so on.
  5. Systems work. Focus on and consolidation of the systems of grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Clients will learn and use new language forms and vocabulary through practice in contemporary, realistic, everyday situations.
  6. Supportive error correction and constructive feedback.
  7. Learner skills development. We aim to teach clients effective ways of learning, from efficient note-taking to ways of storing and activating vocabulary. In particular, we would aim to encourage clients to use self-access resources, such as the library, video room, listening materials, CD-Roms, the Internet and so on.
  8. Progress tests. These are designed to show us how well a client is learning new forms and vocabulary, and how well he or she is able to apply new skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
  9. Tutorials. To provide two-way feedback, so that teachers can pass on hints, tips and advice on how best to study, as well as address any problems shown up by clients’ performance in class and in their progress tests. At the same time, clients can ask for help in areas that are particularly important for them.
  10. Homework. An essential part of every client’s course – consolidates classwork and provides extra practice in the skills and systems.
  11. Academic counselling. Distinct from the tutorials programme, the academic counselling that we provide aims to maximize every client’s potential by advising clients on how to make changes to the way in which they are studying and learning.
  12. Preparation for external examinations. Where possible, we would like to help every client to prepare for an external examination, so that he or she will be able to return home with an internationally-recognized qualification. However, we recognise that our clients are very busy people and they may not have the time available to prepare for an external examination. Our end of course assessment, report and certificate will show how well each client has mastered the language and indicate areas for further work and recommend methodologies for continued improvement.
